There’s something exhilarating about packing up and heading out on another travel adventure with my soulmate. Our lifestyle revolves around his work, and traveling has become our way of life. But let’s be honest—no matter how basic a hotel may be or how much you navigate shared living spaces in a private residence with strangers, it never quite feels like home when you first walk in. The flood of thoughts and natural anxieties that come with the constant transition, from moving every few weeks to every few months, can be overwhelming. But it doesn't have to be difficult.

That’s where I come in. I take pride in contributing to our travels and supporting him, allowing him to focus on his work with ease. While creating softness and beauty outside of harsh work environments.

One of my favorite aspects of being on the road is transforming our hotel or rented room into a cozy, personal retreat that feels as comforting as home. Here’s how I sprinkle a little "home magic" into our stays, making every place feel like our own special space.

Unpack and Personalize

The first thing I do when we arrive is unpack everything. Yes, it sounds simple, but trust me, it makes a huge difference! I hang up our clothes, arrange his ties and shoes neatly, and organize my beauty products on the bathroom counter just the way I would at home. This simple act of settling in instantly takes away that “living out of a suitcase” feeling.

We also bring a few personal touches—picture screensavers of us on the fire stick and a few bottles of my favorite essential oils, a mug we picked up at a much-loved breakfast spot, battery-operated twinkle lights, and other special items we collect along the way. These small things immediately add warmth and personality to the space, making it feel more like us.

Home is where our hearts are, as long as we are together!

Cleaning Upon Arrival

I often take a moment to tidy up the hotel room or rented space, especially when it’s needed for sanitary reasons. Doing bed bug checks, wiping down high-touch surfaces, organizing, unpacking, and getting settled in; being sure to set the tone for our stay. Creating a clean and welcoming environment allows us to relax and settle in, turning the space into a temporary home that feels both comfortable and safe. It’s a small step that makes a big difference in feeling at ease, no matter where we are.

Snacks and Comfort Food Essentials

There’s nothing like having your favorite snacks handy when you’re winding down after a long day. I always pack a little snack bag with our go-to treats—whether it’s dark chocolate, his favorite beef jerky, or even a few yogurt cups and bananas for quick, comforting breakfasts.

If we’re staying for a while, we scout out the local grocery store, downloading appropriate apps for savings and pick up fresh fruit, salad greens, and ingredients for simple, delicious meals. This way, we’re not constantly relying on delivery or fast food. It makes the temporary stay feel more like our space, especially when we’re enjoying something familiar together.

Opening Blinds and Curtains for Natural Light

Natural light can completely transform the atmosphere of a rented or hotel room. The heavy, closed-off feeling that comes with blinds and curtains drawn tight can make the space feel cold and uninviting. To brighten things up, I always open the blinds or pull back the curtains to let in as much natural light as possible. It instantly warms the room and makes it feel more open and welcoming, especially in the morning when the sunlight pours in. As for textures, I like to pack a soft throw blanket or even our silky pillowcases—it feels like a little luxury! These small comforts remind us of home and add an extra layer of relaxation when he is unwinding after a busy day.

Evening Rituals to Wind Down

Just because we’re not at home doesn’t mean we let go of our evening rituals. We always make time for some couple moments, no matter how hectic the day has been. Sometimes, it’s as simple as having a cup of tea or a glass of wine together, chatting about the day, or watching one of our favorite shows. Creating an atmosphere of peace and tranquility is something we both look forward to after a long day of work or travel.

Scent is Everything!

Scent is one of the easiest ways to make a room feel like home. I always bring along a few small bottles of my favorite essential oils—frankincense, vetiver, or wintergreen—so I can create a calming atmosphere. A few drops in the diffuser on a cotton ball near the bed, or even during an after-work massage, can instantly transform the space and make it feel more familiar. The soothing aroma not only helps us relax but also brings a sense of comfort and warmth, making it easier to unwind after a day in our home away from home.

Morning Routines, My Way

Mornings are sacred to me—a quiet ritual that sets the tone for the day. I start with coffee for two, pack his lunch, and prepare a nourishing breakfast to send him off with care. Even when we’re on the road, I aim to keep my routine as close to home as possible—showering, dressing, journaling, and indulging in a good book, all while maintaining a mindful self-care practice. I make the bed as soon as I’m up, creating an instant sense of order, and stay on top of light tidying, dishes, and laundry. I thoughtfully plan my day around his work schedule to ensure we share peaceful moments, creating togetherness during meals, unwinding, and rest. Something is grounding about these familiar rituals; they bring a sense of calm and create a steady foundation for a productive life on the road.

Breakfast, Our Way

Let’s talk about breakfast! When staying in rented rooms or private homes with shared kitchens, I love the freedom to prepare something fresh and satisfying. In rooms where a full kitchen or stove isn’t available, we travel with our trusty electric skillet to make a simple yet delicious breakfast of bacon, eggs, and toast. It’s the perfect solution to avoid relying on processed or packaged hotel options. I’ve also picked up a few microwave, toaster oven, and air fryer hacks to ensure we can enjoy homemade meals in smaller spaces. Whether it’s enjoying yogurt with fresh fruit or toasting bread with our favorite butter, having the right tools makes mornings feel more like home, offering a peaceful start before the day unfolds.

Creating Space for Connection

One of the best parts about turning our room into our cozy haven is that it gives us the perfect environment to connect. I make sure we have a little space to talk, relax, and simply be together. Whether it’s curling up with him on the bed (or sofa, if we’re lucky enough) to chat about his day or having a quiet moment over coffee, I create a comfortable space that fosters those intimate moments.

After all, it’s not just about where we are—it’s about creating an environment that feels like us.

Keeping It Cozy, No Matter the Destination

No matter where we go, my goal is always to make sure my love comes back from his workday to a space that feels warm, welcoming, and filled with love. It’s all in the details—the soft textures, familiar scents, and the feeling of us. Our true home lies not in our spaces but in our hearts.
